Lifestyle Branding

David Edery has an interesting post about the possibility of games companies being lifestyle brands (like Starbucks, Apple). Good read.

There are definitely brands that have created an image for themselves (Blizzard, id, Square), but whether the characteristics of this image extend to the gamers who play their games is uncertain.

The relationship gamers have with game companies is a weird one. They purchase the games, but after that they can be very critical and antagonistic of the company’s moves. After all, most of the complaining about Blizzard is done on the WoW forums and battle.net channels.
