Microsoft's Next-Gen Platform is... the PC?
It is neither the PS3, 360, nor the Wii that will carry the gaming torch into the next era – it is the PC. No matter what way you look at it, no console can match the potential, power, and openness that a PC has.
Well, Jeff Rein was going off on one of his rails about how Intel and US Retail have killed the PC as a gaming platform (via gamesindustry). He brings up some interesting points, and his comments about how Microsoft got me thinking: it isn’t the 360 where Microsoft has the most potential to dominate the next generation of gaming – it is the PC.
Think about it – if Microsoft can make true on the PC initiatives they presented at E3, it could revolutionize gaming as we know it. Live Anywhere could feed more gamers into the PC (lets face it: xbox vs. PC on Halo? PC wins.) and create a single true gaming community out of the fragmented landscape we have now. And well, the PC is their turf – there’s no one else in the world that can rival them to build it up as a gaming platform.
Oh man, can you imagine Microsoft steathily sneaking past the PS3 and Wii with PC domination? How brilliant of a move would that be?

With Microsoft moving Xbox Live to the PC in 2007, it’s just one more step toward what you’re talking about
— GamingGuest Jul 28, 11:03 PM #I’m interested to see how they will implement it. Xbox gamers are used to paying a service to play online – a lot of PC gamers might not be so receptive, unless it is really compelling.
