Digital Distribution: the Environmental Case

Much has been written about the virtues of digital distribution – lower costs, episodic gaming, etc. One of the major benefits it brings, however, is environmental.

Think about how most people buy games currently, in a store. How much energy and waste went in to creating the packaging? The box – unrecyclable because of all the flashy (toxic?) inks that were used to make it stand out on the shelf. After you bring it home, do you ever look at it again?

And what about transportation costs? All of the time, money, energy, and labor spent in producing and transporting all of those materials, shipping it to a warehouse, shipping it to a distribution center, and shipping it to a store – damn, it adds up quickly!

All of this waste – gone – just by downloading a game. Sweet. Talk about fitting video games into your lifestyle – why not green gaming? Reduce that carbon footprint!
