Dem Win Bad for Video Games?

GamePolitics points out a Cnet report grading politicians on their “tech-friendliness.” I am very surprised with their results, which seem to give an edge to Republicans! WTF?

I thought that since the Democrats are the progressives, they would be the more pro-technology (and pro-video games) party – according this report, that isn’t necessarily true.

And a lot of these names are in hot races around the country. George Allen, the highest scoring Senate Republican, is in a statistical dead heat with his opponent Jim Webb in Virginia. Hillary Clinton and Joe Lieberman, who do not seem to be very video game-friendly, are almost certain to retain their seats. GP reports that Rick Santorum (R-PA), who will almost certainly lose his race, is trying to use his work with Clinton over her video game legislation to close the 13%+ deficit he faces in the polls.

What dose this mean for us gamers? Well, I guess we need to pay a lot more attention to how people vote than what they actually say. Everyone says they are for innovation, but it is a lot harder to tell whether or not they back up the rhetoric with votes.

What I fear is that, in preparation for the Presidential race in 2008, candidates from both sides of the aisle will use video games as a whipping boy to position themselves favorably with the social conservatives who were key to George Bush’s reelection ’04.

Democrats will want to win these people over. But at the same time, they won’t want to alienate a their base by touching issues such as gay marriage, embryonic stem cell research, or prayer in schools. So if those issues are out of play, what else can they use to appeal to the social conservatives? Video games!

Since the political power of video game companies and video gamers is almost non-existent (maybe the ECA or the VGVN will change this?), I fear we’re in for a rough next 2 years.

  1. Considering your article got Lieberman’s party wrong (he’s Connecticut for Lieberman, NOT A DEMOCRAT. He takes campaign money from Republicans and is actually in line to become a republican president’s secretary of defense) the only other Democrat you mention is Hillary. She’s always been horribly opportunistic. I’d hardly concern myself with one Democrat when the republicans have a history of censorship and governing based on supposed moral values.
