Enough Spin

I think it is offensive how so many people seem to still be so biased towards Nintendo these days. It isn’t just the fanboys – it seems like the media and the general gamer population seems to be falling in line as well.

Yes, the Wii is an interesting concept. But it is not so revolutionary in any aspect, even the control scheme. Attempting to look at its features objectively, I cannot see how it justifies such a positive image while trashing the other two systems seems to be the internet’s favorite pastime.

And that is why E3’s death is good. Ever since Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony gave their keynotes at the event 6 months ago, the entire dialogue has been tainted by PR and marketing spin that we heard there. I don’t think I have seen anyone who has been able to get past the spin and have honest discussion about the merits of each new system. It’s just ridiculous.

Look at this article at Next-Gen. The byline refers to the Wii as “one of the most extraordinary products of our careers; a genuine outta left-field curio with the potential to change our business forever and for good.” WTF? Is that a joke? Of anything that we can be certain, while the Wii is new and cool, it will NOT “change our business forever and for good.”

To their credit, however, they do end it with a good perspective on the spin: the game industry is doing just fine – the only one who needs a revolution is Nintendo.
