iTunes vs. Steam

What if Apple decided they wanted to go beyond the simple iPod games get into more hardcore-type gaming? They already have the most widely-used digital distribution platform out there in iTunes. I don’t see why it would be that hard to integrate games into the current mix of media that they offer.

And they come out with like 59 new iPods every year – what is preventing them with creating a “game-enabled” iPod optimized to run games and has a couple extra buttons? Nothing. They wouldn’t have to change their current model at all – sell the product in stores, sell the games over iTunes.

Wouldn’t game developers want a part of the iPod, a portable system with an install base bigger than the DS and the PSP combined?

Just a thought.
