Broadband Providers: Pro-Gamers

Game Invasionvia GigaOM, Comcast has launched a new gaming-focused site, GameInvasion which is looks to be a pretty cool site with a lot of game-related content such as gameplay trailers and video interviews. It looks like they are going to tie this in to their Comcast On-Demand service, which I think is pretty sweet – it would be cool to browse preview content from the TV.

On the site, each game gets its own “show” where all related content comes together. I’m not sure if anything really new is on the site, but I think this is nice if you want a centralized, user-friendly place for media if you’re fixated on an upcoming release.

What’s important about this is that it shows Comcast’s commitment to gaming – they realize that it is an important driver for attracting and keeping customers, and they are willing to invest in services and content to keep gamers happy. It looks like they’re doing it right in terms of partnerships: there is already some IGN content on the site, and they are working with MLG for their professional gaming content.

Could broadband providers, who stand to benefit the most from online gaming and digital distribution models, become the counterbalance to the retailers, who stand to lose the most from digital distribution?
